TENNESSEE Law

Do you need this card?

It’s the law in Tennessee! In Tennessee, if you were born on or after 1/1/1989 you must complete a boating safety course.

Tennessee doesn’t issue a “boating license.” What you need is the official Boater Safety Card issued by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) after you complete a NASBLA-approved course like ours.

Quick rules of thumb

  • Born after Jan. 1, 1989? You need boating education to operate a vessel with more than 8.5 horsepower
  • Born on or before Jan. 1, 1989? You’re grandfathered in — no card required, but the course is still smart.
  • 8.5 HP or less? No boating education card is required for that vessel.
  • Just visiting Tennessee? If you were born after Jan. 1, 1989, and operate a boat with more than 8.5 HP, Tennessee accepts any NASBLA-approved boating safety certificate.
  • Supervisor exemption: You can operate without your own card if someone on board is directly supervising you and is either 18+ with the required certification or was born on or before Jan. 1, 1989.

Tennessee FAQ

Tennessee boater questions, answered

Quick, accurate answers to the things Tennessee students ask most. Don’t see yours? Contact us.

Is this course actually accepted by FWC?

Yes. Our course is NASBLA-approved, which is the standard TWRA requires. When you pass, the Boating Safety Education Card you receive is the same credential TWRA issues to anyone who completes an approved course.

Who is required to take it?

Any Tennessee resident born after January 1, 1989, who operates a vessel powered by more than 8.5 horsepower on Tennessee waters must carry a TWRA-issued Boating Safety Education Certificate. Non-residents born after January 1, 1989, must carry proof of completing a NASBLA-approved boating safety course. If you were born on or before January 1, 1989, you’re grandfathered in — the card isn’t required, though we still recommend the course.

How long does the course take?

Most students finish in 3–4 hours. You can study at your own pace, save your progress, and come back whenever — there’s no time limit, so take a week if you want.

Does the card expire?

No. The Tennessee Boating Safety Education Card is valid for life. Pass the course once and you’re set — no renewals, no fees, no re-tests.

What do I need to carry on board?

Tennessee requires boaters who need education to have proof of certification available while operating. Tennessee residents should carry their TWRA-issued Boating Safety Education Certificate, while out-of-state boaters may carry a NASBLA-approved certificate. A printed card or copy is safest.

What if I’m visiting Tennessee from another state?

Tennessee boaters still need proof of education if they were born after January 1, 1989 and operate a vessel over 8.5 HP. The good news: Tennessee accepts NASBLA-approved certificates for out-of-state boaters, while Tennessee residents need the TWRA-issued certificate.

Is there a minimum age to operate a boat?

Tennessee does not set a separate minimum age for regular vessels or PWCs. For vessels over 8.5 HP, operators under 12 must have an adult able to take immediate control, while operators 12 or older may operate alone with the required TWRA boating safety certificate. PWC renters must be at least 16.

What happens if I don’t pass the final exam?

You can retake it at no extra cost. The course is built so you’ll be ready — each section ends with short review questions, and you can rewatch any lesson as many times as you need.

Is there a refund if I change my mind?

Yes. If you haven’t completed the course, we offer a full refund within 30 days of purchase — just email us and we’ll take care of it. Once you’ve completed the course and received your certificate, we can’t offer a refund.

What are the penalties for boating without it?

Operating without required boating safety certification in Tennessee is a fine-only Class C misdemeanor. TWRA officers do enforce it on the water — and a citation is the smaller risk. The bigger one is being unprepared in a moment that matters.
