Do you need this card?

If you were born on or after January 1, 1988 and plan to operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more on Florida waters, the answer is yes.

Florida doesn’t issue a “boating license.” What you need is the official Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) after you complete a NASBLA-approved course like ours.

Quick rules of thumb

  • Born before Jan 1, 1988? You’re grandfathered in — no card required, but the course is still smart.
  • Under 10 HP? No card required for that vessel.
  • Renting a boat? The livery may require a temporary certificate — this course covers that, too.
  • Just visiting Florida? Out-of-state boaters operating in Florida waters still need an approved card.
  • Supervisor exemption: You can operate without a card if someone 18+ on board holds one and is responsible for the vessel.

Course Content

What you’ll actually learn

Florida boating is its own world — tides, traffic, manatee zones, weather that turns on a dime. The course covers every topic on the FWC exam, plus the things you’ll wish you knew the first time you cast off.

Florida-specific

Manatee Protection Zones

Where they are, what the speed limits mean, and how to read the buoys before FWC reads you a ticket.

Florida-specific

Intracoastal Waterway Basics

Reading ICW markers, right-of-way through bridges, and how to share narrow channels with everyone from kayakers to commercial traffic.

Florida-specific

PWC & Jet Ski Rules

Florida’s 14+ minimum age for PWC, lanyard requirements, and the no-night-operation rule that catches a lot of vacationers off guard.

Required gear

Required Safety Equipment

Life jackets, fire extinguishers, visual distress signals, sound producing devices — what you must have, sized to your vessel.

Navigation

Rules of the Road

Right-of-way, navigation lights, sound signals, how to handle a meeting/crossing/overtaking situation without making the news.

Florida-specific

Boating Under the Influence

Florida’s 0.08 BAC limit applies on the water too — with the same penalties as a DUI on land. We cover what FWC officers look for.

Emergencies

When Things Go Wrong

Capsizing, falls overboard, fires, breakdowns, sudden Florida thunderstorms — clear playbooks for the moments that matter most.

Florida-specific

Tides, Currents & Weather

Reading Florida’s tide charts, understanding Gulf vs Atlantic patterns, and spotting the storm cells that come up fast in summer.

Boating skills

Anchoring, Docking & Towing

The skills the test won’t fully cover but that you’ll use every single time out: how to actually handle the boat.

Florida FAQ

Florida boater questions, answered

Quick, accurate answers to the things Florida students ask most. Don’t see yours? Contact us.

Is this course actually accepted by FWC?

Yes. Our course is NASBLA-approved, which is the standard FWC requires. When you pass, the Boating Safety Education ID Card you receive is the same credential FWC issues to anyone who completes an approved course.

Who is required to take it?

Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more on Florida waters. If you were born before that date, you’re grandfathered in — the card isn’t required, though we still recommend the course.

How long does the course take?

Most students finish in 3–4 hours. You can study at your own pace, save your progress, and come back whenever — there’s no time limit, so take a week if you want.

Does the card expire?

No. The Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card is valid for life. Pass the course once and you’re set — no renewals, no fees, no re-tests.

What do I need to carry on board?

Florida law requires you to carry both your Boating Safety Education ID Card and a photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.) any time you’re operating. A digital copy of the card is fine in most cases, but a printed copy is safer.

What if I’m visiting Florida from another state?

You still need the card if you fall under the age requirement and operate a 10 HP+ vessel in Florida waters. The good news: most NASBLA-approved cards from other states are recognized by FWC, so if you already have one, you’re likely covered. If you don’t, this Florida course will set you up everywhere.

Is there a minimum age to operate a boat?

Florida has no minimum age to operate a regular vessel — but you must hold the Boating Safety Education ID Card if you’re subject to the age law. Personal watercraft (PWC / jet skis) are different: operators must be at least 14, and renters must be at least 18.

What happens if I don’t pass the final exam?

You can retake it at no extra cost. The course is built so you’ll be ready — each section ends with short review questions, and you can rewatch any lesson as many times as you need.

Is there a refund if I change my mind?

Yes. If you haven’t completed the course, we offer a full refund within 30 days of purchase — just email us and we’ll take care of it. Once you’ve completed the course and received your certificate, we can’t offer a refund.

What are the penalties for boating without it?

Operating without a required Boating Safety Education ID Card in Florida is a non-criminal infraction punishable by a fine. FWC officers do enforce it on the water — and a citation is the smaller risk. The bigger one is being unprepared in a moment that matters.
